An unusual project in Huntingdonshire has demonstrated that almost any installation is possible if you choose your conservatory roof supplier carefully. Here, Martin Saunders, Sales Director of Eurocell Profiles, explains why.
“When Elglaze Ltd, our fabricator based in Earith, Huntingdonshire, approached us with a layout for a new conservatory, our design team was soon relishing the challenges it presented. The initial survey had highlighted that the bungalow had been built out of square – the ‘L’ shaped wing of the property was 67.1 degrees rather than the usual 90 degrees!
As soon as we saw the drawing we immediately checked to make sure there hadn’t been a mistake with the measurements. We always do this where there is any doubt – customers appreciate our thoroughness because they know that it avoids any unnecessary delays further down the line. Although quite an innovative solution was required to address the angles on this property, our conservatory team was soon able to demonstrate its creativity and resourcefulness. With our back up, Elglaze ultimately gained the order from the homeowner based on the fact it was one of the few companies that could cope with the complex design and installation issues required.
The plan of the conservatory shown here highlights the complex angles that our conservatory team had to deal with – it is testament to the design they produced and quality of the installation that it is difficult to tell from the photograph what shape the conservatory actually is. Subtle repositioning of the roof’s glazing bars helped compensate for the variation in angles but the real secret lies in the raised box gutter and manual crafting of the hip positions during fabrication of the roof kit.
Along with the conservatory, Elglaze also supplied a French door that leads onto the garden. An 1800mm Eurocell sliding bi-fold door separates the conservatory from the kitchen, which is just visible in the photograph. The Eurocell frames and doors were fabricated by Elglaze’s parent company Design Windows and the whole conservatory was installed by Elglaze.
A well chosen conservatory roof supplier will provide you with the best opportunity of securing these types of high value contracts. That means a supply partner that is willing to work with you to identify the best solution, which in the case of the Earith project meant ensuring the visual appeal of the conservatory, whilst addressing the construction and installation issues.
Steve Martin at Elglaze summed it up by saying: “We were delighted when the Eurocell conservatory team said they had a solution. It just goes to show that a well-designed system that is easy to install can overcome most issues on-site.”
Being able to source conservatory roofs, French door and window profile systems from a single supplier is another clear business advantage for Eurocell fabricators and installers. In addition to saving time and resources compared to a multi-supply route, it addresses homeowners’ expectations on quality and aesthetics. This is because they are becoming more demanding and now expect a perfect colour match between the conservatory roof and frames, which is usually only possibly through the single source route.
As part of this, we have been investing in a range of new conservatory roof products that are designed to help fabricators win more business. The most recent addition is a complete range of conservatory profiles in our unique Cream colour, complementing the existing Golden Oak, and Rosewood colours.
Eurocell is committed to supporting its fabricators and installers by satisfying homeowner demand for more choice, which is why we stock perfectly colour-matched Cream roofline through our 100-plus branch network, alongside the existing ranges.
Along with investment in new product development, making conservatories easier to install remains an ongoing focus for us, which ultimately helps installers to maximise margins once they have gained the order. As part of this, we recently introduced a new bi-fold bolster. This sturdy 70mm aluminium box section provides structural support for installation of the increasingly popular bi-fold door.
Recent investments in our conservatory roof business are helping an increasing number of fabricators grow their sales in this sizeable market. There are still many opportunities for securing conservatory sales, and the best chance of doing this is through partnering with a company that has the resources, expertise and range to cope with all the realities on site – even a 67.1° bungalow!”

Following on from my previous post Don’t Bury It, Recycle It, Matt Rick from Eurocell sent me the following internal memo about Eurocell’s strategic acquisition of Merritt Plastics Ltd:
“Eurocell Profiles Ltd has today announced the acquisition of Merritt Plastics Ltd.
Merritt Plastics is a post-consumer PVC-u recycling and extrusion company, based in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. It recycles post-consumer window frames which would otherwise be sent to landfill waste sites. Fabricators and installers are incentivised to supply old frames to the Ilkeston site for processing, an initiative part-funded by industry body Recovinyl. Merritt Plastics also extrudes Cavalok cavity closers from its 100%
post-consumer PVC-u material.
The acquisition of Merritt will strengthen our business by offering Eurocell customers a service for recycling old frames they remove from site. This improves their carbon footprint and sustainability, an issue continually growing in importance for everyone in the industry. Plus, it saves our customers money by not sending waste to landfill, especially as charges for the disposal of waste are rising sharply.
Merritt Plastics is an excellent acquisition for Eurocell because it extends the service we can offer our customers, gives us operational efficiency benefits for producing Cavalok cavity closers and demonstrates our commitment to continuously improving our environmental performance.”

I wouldn’t normally publish such articles, but I feel it is a very positive move by Eurocell and will help push other extrusion companies to see the recycling of post consumer waste as vital for the future of the industry.
